Deluxe: Independence Hotel First built in 1963, the Independence hotel was the watering hole for the rich elite of Cambodia in the sixties, but went into a sad decline until 2007, when the deco-style building was comprehensively remodeled and extended to create a stylish and comfortable hotel. The hotel occupies a massive 40-hectare wooded headland estate, steps leading down to a lovely private beach (probably the best in Sihanoukville) and elegant beachside bar/restaurant.

Hotels in Kep
Superior: Knai Bang Chatt Hotel
Built in the early sixties, these three modernist villas were abandoned in 1970 and left to decay until acquired in 2003 by two Belgian entrepreneurs, restored and opened as a hotel (one extra villa was added) - probably the last word in serenity and minimalism. The concept here is of staying at a private house, and the starkly beautiful rooms feature neither TVs or telephones: but the beauty of the gardens, houses and above all the view more than make up for it. The sailing club next door also offers a less formal dining and drinking environment.
